Webber cautious about RB7?s pace

Mark Webber insists that Red Bull remains cautious about the competitiveness of its RB7, despite the car showing signs of an advantage over its rivals. The new Red Bull topped the first two days at Barcelona this week in the hands of Sebastian Vettel, though more impressive was its ability to lap consistently quickly over a stint, while most teams struggled to hold on to tyre performance. But Webber is adamant that Red Bull still has issues to focus on and believes Ferrari is looking strong.

Fourteen-Car Crash Comes Early in Daytona 500

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- The racing may look different at Daytona, but the big crashes are still around.

Less than 30 laps in to Sunday's Daytona 500, contact between a former Daytona winner, Michael Waltrip, and another car he owns set off a 14-car melee in turn four. Waltrip nudged David Reutimann into a spin on the race's 29th lap to start the incident.

Earlier in the race, Waltrip spun Kyle Busch on lap six -- an incident that managed to miss the rest of the pack.

"They make a quick move and it just spins them out," Waltrip said. "I've been doing this all week and I haven't spun anyone out. I'm involved in both of them and I don't know what I could have done different."

The crash collected several of the race's likely contenders, including reigning five-time NASCAR Sprint Cup Series champion Jimmie Johnson as well as his teammates Jeff Gordon and Mark Martin.

Ecclestone ?more hopeful? on Bahrain GP

Bernie Ecclestone insists he is becoming more hopeful that the season-opening Bahrain Grand Prix will be able to go ahead as planned, and that the political situation in the region will calm - despite continuing unrest. Concern has been growing over whether both the Bahrain Formula 1 race on 11-13 March and the final pre-season test at the Sakhir track on 3-6 March should take place following tension that saw several fatalities and large numbers of injuries when security forces dispersed protesters in Manama on Thursday. Angry crowds have today gathered at the funerals of some of those killed in the violence, while pro-government demonstrations have also been held in Manama

Teams will follow FIA, FOM on Bahrain

Formula 1 teams will back the decision made by Bernie Ecclestone and the FIA over whether the under-threat Bahrain Grand Prix will take place, according to Red Bull team principal Christian Horner. The 2011 season opener, scheduled to be held on March 13, is in doubt because of unrest in Bahrain - which forced this weekend's GP2 Asia race to be canned. Horner, speaking on behalf of the Formula 1 Teams' Association (FOTA) after a meeting held after today's testing in Barcelona, insists that it's not down to the teams to make the call.

Lots of Daytona 500 Winners

This past weekend produced a multitude of Daytona 500 winners. Trevor Bayne won the opening round of the 2011 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series on Sunday, of course, but Saturday saw 37 different iRacers take checkered flags in the iRacing.com Daytona 500, Round Two of the 2011 World Tour of iRacing.com. Clint Bowyer Wins Pole for Nationwide Race at Daytona, Danica Fourth

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- Up until the final few minutes of Friday's NASCAR Nationwide Series qualifying, it looked as if IndyCar star-turned-NASCAR newbie Danica Patrick may just have landed herself the pole position at stock car's most famous track, Daytona International Speedway.

Midway through the session Patrick laid down the fastest lap of the afternoon bumping veteran Carl Edwards off the top spot and igniting a buzz around the garage area. Had her lap stood, she would have been the first woman to win a Nationwide Series pole since Shawna Robinson did it in March 1994.

Instead, another newcomer, Landon Cassill, knocked Patrick out of the top spot only to have Sprint Cup Series veteran Clint Bowyer come in and better them both. Bowyer's lap of 180.821 mph in the Kevin Harvick-owned No. 33 Rheem Chevrolet earned the former series champ the pole position for Saturday's DRIVE4COPD 300 and stifled the building frenzy around a possible Patrick front row start.

Cassill will start alongside him while another late qualifier Dale Earnhardt Jr,. took the third position. He'll start next to Patrick on the second row; he owns both cars.

This is only Patrick's 13th Nationwide Series start in her highly-publicized racing double as a full-time driver in the IZOD IndyCar Series and a part-timer in NASCAR's second-tier Nationwide circuit.

"It's been a fast car the whole time we've been here,'' Patrick said, as she watched the remaining few cars qualify. "No matter what happens now, it'll be a good starting position. This is a big deal and for it to come at Daytona, it's 10 times a bigger deal.''

Travel warning increases Bahrain doubts

The issuing of a UK Foreign Office warning advising against "all but essential travel to Bahrain" has increased Formula 1 teams' concerns about the viability of the season-opener, amid continuing political tension in Bahrain. After further violence in Manama on Friday, the Foreign Office strengthened its warning against traveling to Bahrain today. Renault team boss Eric Boullier said this move makes the decision much more serious for teams

Hamlin gunning for early season wins

Last year's NASCAR Sprint Cup runner-up Denny Hamlin has targeted early-season race wins as he bids to topple series dominator Jimmie Johnson in 2011. With the Chase for Championship system rewarding race wins due to its revised points system, Hamlin is keen to 'set the tone' as he attempts to end Johnson's efforts to extend his winning streak to a record six consecutive titles. "I'm excited to get the season going, for me there's a lot optimism right now," Hamlin told AUTOSPORT

Practice crash costs Earnhardt pole

Pole-winner Dale Earnhardt Jr will now start from the rear of the field in his Gatorade Duel and the Daytona 500 after damaging his primary car in an incident during Wednesday's NASCAR Sprint Cup Series practice. Earnhardt was pushing Hendrick Motorsports team-mate Jimmie Johnson coming out of Turn 4 when they arrived behind the slower tandem of David Gilliland and Robby Gordon, while running in a rain-delayed practice session. As Johnson seemed to be running out of space while trying to pass the slower cars on the outside, he got off the throttle as did Earnhardt behind him, but Michael Waltrip Racing's Martin Truex Jr, who was trailing the pair, could not avoid running into the back of him while being pushed by Red Bull's Brian Vickers
